A Worldwide Standard Culinary School in Maslak

Whirlpool Culinary Art Academy (MSA), the first and only private cooking school certified by the Turkish Ministry of Education, providing internationally accepted vocational  certificates, and accredited by City & Guilds, opened its state-of-the-art campus with an investment of over 2 million Euros.

On the 17th of August, Mehmet K. Aksel the founder of MSA, Levent Hatay the CEO of Vestel Company Groups representing MSA’s main sponsor Whirlpool,  and Cüneyt Yağcı the General manager of GroupeSEB representing the sponsor Tefal, inaugurated an opening ceremony emphasising that MSA’s new challenge will be to go beyond Europe and become the world’s best culinary school.

MSA, the only Turkish culinary school that provides worldwide acknowledged European standards and chosen as one of the two best City & Guilds accredited European culinary schools,  enhanced its education system with professional kitchens based on Euro 2011 norms, and will presume at Maslak campus with a tripled capacity.

MSA’s founder Mehmet K. Aksel, who has recently financed a major investment considering the financial crises, stated in his opening speech that he is very proud to announce that his journey which started with 24 students per course has turned out to be a success story operating with a daily capacity of 500 people.

Mehmet K. Aksel stated that their students, who are educated in just 8 months, are ready to have a career, able to work at the best 5-star hotels and restaurants, even become chef candidates abroad, when they graduate. Mr Aksel also emphasised that in spite of the financial crises, most of their students are offered permanent jobs during their training, and approximately 90% of MSA’s 2000 graduates are currently working in prominent places and positions.

“Our challenge will go beyond Europe; we intend to be significant in the world”

Mehmet K. Aksel, who established MSA in 2004, has recently marked a first in Turkey with the comprehensive infrastructure of his 2.100 square meter campus enhanced also by his know-how. In view of the fact, that last year MSA was selected to be one of the best City & Guilds accredited European culinary schools, Mr. Aksel emphasised that this new campus will carry their challenge beyond Europe with the intention of being significant in the world.

Levent Hatay, the CEO of Vestel Company Groups, who represents the prevailing Whirlpool products with a wide spread service network, made a speech on behalf of MSA’s main sponsor Whirlpool, stating that they have supported MSA since the day it was founded and said:.

“At the beginning, as with our other sponsorships, we focused on matching up Whirlpool’s target mass with the target mass of MSA. The MSA workshops developed for amateurs were effective in motivating our collaboration.

However, MSA should be considered as a comprehensive vocational education project, rather than an institute providing courses solely for amateurs. I personally believe that what MSA provides is very valuable. As Whirlpool, we also trust that MSA will go beyond Europe and will be worldwide considered. We are also proud to support MSA on its way achieving its goals.”

Besides the professional Cookery, Pastry & Bakery, and Food & Beverage Administration courses, MSA’s new campus currently located at Maslak, provides also workshops and institutional activities, consultancy services, and consists of professional kitchens based on Euro 2011 norms, kitchens designed for workshops, classrooms for bartending, barista, and sommeliers, as well as special rooms designed for various seminars.

Another noteworthy aspect of the new campus includes Turkey’s one and only ‘Library based on Mastering in Food & Beverage and Rare Books’ as well as a museum exhibiting a special collection on the history of the Turkish Food & Beverage. The school library holds 2.500 books of which the 400 are rare pieces, while the museum contains more than 700 pieces of art with an archive related to the sectorial life style and development of the Ottoman history, from 1800s until the Republic.

The state-of-the-art technological features of the MSA campus equipped with systems equivalent to European 2011 expectations are:
Intelligent electricity consumption and austerity system, European 2011 standard bacteria drainpipes used in water sewage, stainless steel oil and starch traps in water sewage systems, automatic fire detectors, alarms and extinguishers throughout the school including the stovepipes, fabric channelled air-conditioning systems with homogenised air spread…

MSA's founder Mehmet K. Aksel reminded that 2 million Euros were spent for the new school and all the MSA sponsors including Unilever, Unipro, Metro, and particularly Whirlpool and Tefal had extensively supported this investment.
