About Our School
Istanbul, April 2008
Hello,
Everyone formerly interested in our school knows that Whirlpool Culinary Arts Academy (WCAA) is the first and only private cooking school certified by the Ministry of Education of Turkey. After it was accredited by City & Guilds and started issuing internationally accepted certificates, our challenge has gone beyond Turkey.
City & Guilds has joined in the Europass system in October 2007; accordingly, since then our students have gained limitless opportunities that enable them to study and work in Europe.
From now on our graduates, who will certify their skills and competence with their City & Guilds diplomas, will easily be able to go to any country in Europe (European Community, EFTA/EEA as well as the nominated countries) to work or progress their education. With the recognition of WCAA in the Europass system, the living-in-Europe dream of our graduates has come true. www.europass.com
One other new opportunity we have prepared for our graduates is the agreement we have signed with Alma - La Scuola Internazionale di Cucina Italiana, one of the worldly most prominent schools in the Italian Cuisine supported also by the Italian government.
This agreement provides the students graduating from our school to specialize on the Italian Cuisine in Italy for the duration of 5 months with a following training period of also 5 months enabling them to graduate as a “Professional Italian Chef”. The Alma authorities have made a generous offer to our school and to our students willing to apply to this programme. They offered to treat our students exclusively by undertaking the accommodation expenses of only our students during their education and training periods. http://www.alma.scuolacucina.it/
I would also like to thank the Italian Cultural Centre for their warm approach and the useful opportunities they have offered us and our students during this process.
A few months ago, during a City & Guilds meeting in England, I had been personally a witness to a conversation among board members who were saying that, of the 547 cooking schools they had within their organization, the best two were the Westminster Kingsway College and the Culinary Arts Academy.
Today these two schools are planning to join their forces. During the month of April we are organizing a programme for our Pastry-Bakery students with Westminster Kingsway College, similar to the programme organized with Alma for our Cookery students. We are offering a selective career opportunity to our students who wish to take a “professional education” and specialize on Pastry, Bakery as well as Chocolate. www.westking.ac.uk
We also have current supportive activities with Redbridge College and Le Monde. Our fruitful co-operations as such provide our students a variety of school connections abroad, where they can specialize in the subjects of their choice.
After attending many meetings and seminars, the impression we have had is that the education and the internationally recognized certificates we provide are matchless between the boundaries from Italy to Japan.
Our Advanced Leveled Education on Staff for Yachts Programme, approved by the Ministry of Education, continuessuccessfully.
Our new building in Alkent, which is currently under construction, will soon be ready to offer you the Illy International Coffee Courses. This same building will also provide the first and only “Food and Beverage Library” in Turkey, established to serve and help our students as well anyone interested in the subject.
Our web site is visited by 3000 different IP addresses daily; 5,000,000 of our web pages are examined monthly, and the number of our registered members has reached 200,000. We plan to expand this rich potential with our new communication site intended to serve on “Food & Beverage” issues. A very big surprise is waiting for you.
Very soon, you'll be able to enroll in our amateur courses and shop for kitchen utensils through our web site.
We continue to give theoretical and applied courses to organizations. We have enthusiastically and proudly undertaken the teaching of Turkish Airlines staff since the beginning of March. We are sharing our accumulated knowledge and experience with the flying personnel of THY through lectures on “the Art of Entertainment” and “Turkish Hospitality”.
We are actively working on the meticulously prepared book for one of our major sponsor Tefal’s product which has not yet been launched anywhere in the world. When completed, this book will be our 4th book prepared for the Tefal – Moulinex group.
I'd like to remind our amateur and professional kitchen enthusiasts who have visited our site for the first time, how far we have come since the beginning.
We are different from our counterparts in the way that we have founded the Culinary Arts Academy not only for professionals but also for amateurs who take cooking seriously. We opened in 2004 with the support we got from Vestel, the technology giant of Turkey. This is the most advanced culinary school in Turkey.
Our first aim was to educate our students in our cultural heritage, the “unique” art of Turkish cuisine, together with major cuisines of the world through applied lessons in the way they deserved to be taught. In the meantime, we were also adapting to the rapid changes in the social life of Istanbul, which has been turning more and more cosmopolitan, and of Turkey which has been shedding its skin.
In 2005, we were approved by the Ministry of Education of Turkey. This made us the first and only private institution in the field which was officially permitted to issue certificates.
The same year we started "Metro Professional Food & Beverage Management" an applied programme. It was aimed at people who wanted to turn their hobbies into a business and wanted to set up their own enterprise. It was met with huge interest. As of today, we have close to 1000 graduates. We are proud of our graduates who have been setting up their own businesses or taking over the responsibilities of major establishments.
In February 2006, after we got approvals from the Ministry, we started our vocational programme, "Turkish Cuisine", "Cuisines of the World" and "Pastry and Bread Making" for people who wanted to have careers in these fields. In 2006, another "first" took place: Our school was approved by City & Guilds, one of the most respected authorities in the world, in terms of the quality of its infrastructure, the contents of its curriculum and its trainees. This enabled us to give out a certificate of world-wide recognition.
We have 8 month long vocational programmes, "UFS Professional Education of Cookery" and "Unipro Professional Education of Pastry and Bread Making" which we have started with the support of Unilever, the world giant. These programmes consist of 5 month long education and project activities and a 5 month long training period. These programmes gained recognition beyond Turkey, right from the first season.
Close to 500 of our graduates have done or are doing their training at 5 star hotels or restaurants, some of them abroad, or have got job offers and are working or have been starting up their own businesses.
Our aim for the 2008-2009 season is to graduate 1000 professional students some of whom will have come from abroad, and to ensure that 5000 amateurs spend memorable hours having a good time while learning new things.
Our Academy is now standing on an international platform. We owe this to our amateur and professional programmes, to our education in business administration, in personnel training, in boutique and corporate activities. We also owe it to our student and trainer exchange programmes with institutions abroad, our cultural activities and our lasting success.
Our school occupies 7 floors and has an infrastructure that is admired by everybody. It comprises classes of professional cooking, professional pastry and bread making, amateur cooking, professional bar tending and computerized classes which teach theory.
We founded our green house at the end of 2005. We have brought seeds and seedlings from different parts of the world (agricultural establishments, plantations, seed growers, and universities) to cultivate. We have created a natural environment providing students with the opportunity of being introduced to herbs and greens they will help to raise and learn to use in the kitchen.
Our newly establishing “Food and Beverage Library”, besides being a first, seems to be unique in Turkey.
We have been expanding and enforcing our staffs of local and foreign trainers and consultants, who are now in charge of the kitchens of 5 star hotels and other establishments.
They are esteemed people who have written books that have been published in many languages and who closely follow all the culinary activities in the world. This staff has been fully trained by City & Guilds experts and trainer trainers who came from abroad, in the fields of Group Training Techniques, One-to-one Training Techniques, Health and Safety, Health and Hygiene, Food Handlers, First-Aid Training and Fire Safety Training. They continuously receive further training and they are occasionally inspected.
Today, we are a culinary school which has successfully integrated amateur and professional cooking. We are among the top prestigious, certified schools. We are trying to present you with the best and most professional services, maintaining a staff of experts day and night. And, we will continue doing so...
Respectfully yours,
Mehmet K. Aksel
